Any Advanced Life Support Provider hired by Galway Emergency Medical Services shall understand that they need to be an “on-line” Paramedic, in the REMO Region, in good standing with a valid EMT card, CPR card and driver's license. They will be expected to provide efficient and immediate care to the critically ill and injured, and to safely transport the patient to a medical facility. Along with these responsibilities, includes daily tasks in the station such as ambulance checks each shift, daily chores, and monthly medication checks.
- Drive to any location in an emergency or otherwise in a safe manner.
- Be able to function in uncommon situations (i.e. emergencies).
- Have an understanding of body substance isolation.
- Understand basic medical-legal principles.
- Function within the scope of care as defined by State, Regional and local regulatory agencies.
- Comply with regulations on the handling of the deceased, notifies authorities and arranges for protection of property and evidence at the scene.
- Appropriately “size up” the scene, park the emergency vehicle in an appropriate safe location, identify the number of patients, establish a mechanism of injury or illness and be able to call for additional resources.
- Open a patient’s airway and maintain it with BLS & ALS adjuncts.
- Ventilate a patient(s).
- Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including use of an automated external defibrillator and/or Advanced Life Support defibrillator.
- Provide prehospital emergency medical care of simple and multiple system trauma such as
- Controlling hemorrhage.
- Treatment of shock (hypo perfusion) including approved intravenous therapies.
- Bandaging wounds.
- Immobilization of painful, swollen or deformed extremities, the neck and/or spine.
- Provide emergency medical care to:
- Assist in emergency childbirth
- Manage general medical complaints of altered mental status, respiratory, cardiac, diabetic, allergic reaction, seizures, poisoning behavioral emergencies, environmental emergencies and psychological crises. Additional care is provided based upon assessment of the patient and obtaining historical information.
- Searching for medical identification emblems as a guide to appropriate emergency medical care.
- Assisting patients with prescribed medications, including sublingual nitroglycerin, epinephrine auto-injectors and hand-held aerosol inhalers.
- Administration of oxygen, oral glucose, and any ALS medications within your Scope of Practice.
- Reassure patients and bystanders by working in a confident, efficient manner.
- Avoiding mishandling and undue haste while working expeditiously to accomplish the task.
- Assess trauma injured patient(s) for the extent of their injuries and gives all possible emergency care while protecting the patient and themselves.
- Lift their end of a stretcher (125 pounds).
- Continue emergency medical care and assessment of the patient while enroute to the medical facility.
- Select the appropriate medical facility (hospital) for the patient to receive treatment PER medical control (off-line and on-line).
- Gives verbal report to the receiving hospital staff prior to arrival and upon transfer of the patient to a hospital employee certified at Registered Nurse or higher.
- Appropriately documents their observations and emergency medical care of the patients at the emergency scene and in transit, to the receiving medical facility staff for purposes of records and diagnostics.
- Upon request provides assistance to the receiving medical facility staff.
- Restock and replace used linens, blankets and other supplies.
- Clean all equipment following appropriate disinfecting procedures.
- In accordance with local, state or federal regulations, decontaminates the interior of the vehicle after transport of patient with contagious infection or hazardous materials exposure.
- Attend continuing education and refresher training programs as required by employers, medical control, licensing or certifying agencies.
