Under clinical supervision of the RN, this position provides medical services including
obtaining vital sign information, administering psychotropic medication via injection to
consumers, and collecting blood and urine specimens for ordered lab work. This individual
is responsible for medication receipt and inventory control. This position also provides CPR,
Bloodborne Pathogen and the Virginia DBHDS REVIVE training to staff and provides
educational services to consumers and other groups as well.


JOB EXPECTATIONS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Provide medical services to consumers who may been diagnosed with mental health,
intellectual and/or developmental, or substance use disorders, collecting vital sign
information.
• Collect blood and urine specimens and forward to LabCorp or another lab as directed.
• Administer injections of medication to consumers.
• Maintain documentation in Electronic Health Record in consumer’s file as required in the
delivery of outpatient services.
• Keep track and report direct service and time spent in consumer-related activities in a
timely manner.
• Monitor consumers’ use of therapeutic medications.
• Provide medication management, including delivering medications and monitoring
consumers.
• Order and document the receipt of medication purchased through the State Allocation
Fund.
• Ensure efficient and accurate use of Patient Assistance Programs through The
Pharmacy Connection software.
• Communicate with pharmaceutical representatives to maintain an adequate supply of
samples for consumers and updated pharmaceutical information for staff and
consumers.
• Assure quality control of all medications by conducting routine inventories and removing
expired products according to Board of Pharmacy regulations.
• Act as a consultant to staff on matters related to the physical status and medical needs
of consumers.
• Provide nursing support for agency’s Psychiatric Services Team.
• Monitor agency’s compliance with respect to OSHA’s Blood-borne Pathogens Standard
and provides blood-borne pathogens training to employees.
• Provide flu and infectious disease training as per Licensure regulations.
• Participate at scheduled administrative meetings, clinical staff meetings, and general
staff meetings.
• Assure the confidentiality of protected health information as required by law and
according to the GPCS confidentiality policies, state law, and in the Federal Drug and
Alcohol Confidentiality Law, 42 CFR Part 2, as applicable.
• Report any behavior issues with a consumer.
• To be available to intervene when needed in consumer emergencies occurring during
operating hours.
• Provide consultation and education services to other community organizations and
individuals.
• Participate at conferences, continuing education, in-service training, and staff
development activities which impact on the delivery of outpatient services.
• To perform other assigned duties as necessary within established policy and
procedures.


REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION
Course of studies required to be a Licensed Practical Nurse

EXPERIENCE
None required, but 1-2 years of experience in a medical office or hospital is desirable

LICENSE(S)
Licensed Practical Nurse
Position will be required to possess a valid Virginia driver's license

• Ability to perform all medical functions required of a Licensed Practical Nurse in
obtaining vitals, administering injections, and collecting and maintaining chain of custody
in processing blood and urine specimens, and administer/deliver medication.

Excel.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of consumer’s information.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work environment is primarily a medical clinic and office environment. Exposure to
bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and needles are present. Travel is involved to
and from Goochland and Powhatan facilities. May involve exposure to aggressive verbal
and physical behavior, and exposure to infectious diseases from others.

Average Weight Required to lift or carry at any one time: 50 pounds for brief periods of time
