The Medical Director is responsible for working with Vice President of Clinical Services and Service Director of Medical Services in establishing medical practice and productivity standards that are consistent with good medical standards of practice, in compliance with administrative rules and are consistent with the requirements of major contractors for behavioral health services including Medicaid, Oregon Health Plan, Medicare, state general fund and commercial insurance.  The medical staff, which includes both staff and independent contractor physicians, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners, and nurses working at multiple sites report directly or indirectly to the Medical Director who will be responsible for coordinating practices among the medical staff and being liaison between medical staff and the clinical management team.  Participation in the Quality Management process that is responsible for ongoing review and development of services and systematic review of client complaints and critical incidents. 

Location: This position is based out of LifeWorks NW's Sylvan site.

Pay/Benefits: $170.00 starting hourly pay plus Full benefits.

This position is 32 hours per week. 

As a behavioral health organization, LifeWorks NW employees are required to have had their COVID 19 vaccination (or have an approved medical/religious exemption) per State of Oregon rules. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required upon hire. 

Essential Responsibilities: 

  • Advise VP of Clinical Services and Service Directors in the development, implementation and periodic review of medical policies and procedures for the agency and within each service.
  • Under the direction of the VP of Clinical Services, assist in communicating changes in policies and procedures that effect medical practices to all medical staff.
  • Ensure compliance with medical oversight of treatment services as required by MHO, State, and Federal rules and regulations.
  • Chair a quarterly medical staff meeting.
  • Work with the Service Director for Medical Service as a liaison between medical staff and clinical services.
  • Review all formal complaints that involve medical staff practices.
  • Participate in all Peer Reviews implemented in response to Sentinel Events.
  • Complete Monthly Chart Audits of Medical Services 
  • Provide crisis back-up coverage for medical services.
  • Participate in Quality Management process.
  • Complete clinical documentation and supervisory notes in electronic health record system running standard reports as needed.
  • Check e-mail/voice mail daily when working.
  • Continually increase level of cultural sensitivity, awareness and competency.
  • With the Service Director of Medical Services provides assistance to direct reports with work issues including establishing clear expectations regarding performance and training.
  • Provides support and attention to employee successes and addresses performance issues promptly and effectively.
  • With the Service Director of Medical Services provides regular supervision to staff (minimally two times per month); performance reviews completed timely and accurately; reviews and approves timesheets.
  • Travels between sites or in the community
  • Participate in regular individual and team meetings with supervisor.  
  • Attend informational and clinical meetings which may include all staff and team meetings, consultation with other staff and required trainings.

Qualifications:  

  • Board Certified Psychiatrist 
  • Must have current license to practice without restriction. 
  • Three years in community mental health and/or outpatient alcohol and drug treatment highly desirable.
  • Previous experience with children and adolescents desirable.
  • Previous Medical Director experience desirable.
  • Experience with managed behavioral health care essential. Knowledge of quality management and NCQA requirements highly desirable. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and contract medical staff to effect change and assure compliance with internal and external standards.
  • Good computer skills including a functional knowledge of Outlook, Word and Excel.  Ability to master use of proprietary software including electronic health record system.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills and maintains a cooperative working relationship with others in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Requires access to a car and valid driver's license.
  • If recovering from a substance abuse related disorder, must be able to demonstrate continuous sobriety under nonresidential, independent living conditions for the immediate past two years.
  • Ability to perform essential functions of job without creating a direct threat to the safety of self or others.
