Medical Technologist/Medical Lab Technician
JOB SUMMARY
Performs all analytical procedures in the laboratory in the specialties of chemistry, serology, hematology, blood banking, urinalysis, microbiology, coagulation, and body fluid analysis. Solves unexpected and complicated problems and confirms the results of tests. Possess an extensive knowledge of techniques, instrumentation, and the basic medical sciences.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Registered ASCP or HHS approved or the equivalent (completed within 1 year of employment).
- A Bachelor of Science Degree or equivalent is required OR Graduate (Associate or Bachelors) from an accredited college or university majoring Medical Lab Technology.
- An Associate degree or equivalent is required.
- This job position is acceptable to act as a general supervisor under the following condition: Has earned an Associate degree in a laboratory science from an accredited institution and have two years of training for experience in highly complex testing.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs routine and special laboratory tests within all designated areas of the
laboratory.
- Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action. Provides assistance to laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the manager or clinical pathologist as needed.
- Calls critical test results to physicians or nurses immediately and according to established criteria
- Prepares tests legibly. Initials and dates own work performed. Reviews reports for clerical accuracy and clinical indications.
- Calculates, record and reports all laboratory tests with accuracy and precision.
- Answers or investigates technical calls or inquiries.
- Keeps up to date with lab practices, procedure, policies and techniques.
- Performs quality control tests within a designated area
- Runs quality control tests in accordance to procedure and maintains appropriate data recording
- Analyzes quality control data and takes appropriate corrective action when results are outside acceptable limits. Provides assistance to laboratory c0-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from manager as needed. Documents actions taken.
- Holds patient results until out -of-control situation are resolved. Reports any unresolved situations to manager, or where appropriate, the clinical pathologist.
- Reviews Quality Control and reports any trends or out-of-control situations to the laboratory manager.
- Performs preventative maintenance and troubleshooting
- Observes and follows departmental preventative maintenance schedules.
- Documents all instrument checks, preventative maintenance, problems and corrective actions taken.
- Recognizes, analyzes, and takes corrective action to resolve instrument/clinical problems. Provides assistance to laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from manager as needed. Document action taken. Reports any unresolved situation to manager.
- Provides in-service training to other laboratory personnel within a designated area.
- Provides instruction in laboratory bench procedures, instrument/clinical troubleshooting techniques, and clinical application of test results.
- Assures assimilation of procedures and evaluates troubleshooting techniques. Documents same by initialing department checklist.
- Assists the manager in establishing educational programs that will meet the needs of employees.
- Checks existing lab procedures and makes recommendations for new and improved procedures and techniques. Writes new procedures under the guidance of the
- Must be willing to attend schooling for new instrumentation and train co-workers as
- Must assist in installation of new instrumentation (normal range, linearity, procedures etc.) as directed by the laboratory manager.
- Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs.
- Performs specimen collection and processing duties as needed or assigned and according to polies established in the phlebotomy area.
- Assists the Respiratory Department in performing EKG’s when needed.
- Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training.
- Keeps work area neat and clean, and restocks daily supplies.
- Processes reference lab work as needed.
- Participates in Lab Proficiency testing as directed.
- Maintains yearly competency under the direction of the manager.
- Adheres to the hospital compliance policy and immediately reports any concerns to the manager.
- Will assist the pathologist in performing bone marrow, autopsies, and y other
pathologist directed procedure.
- Must be available for any shift staffing when needed and be willing to work alternate
weekends as scheduled.
- Must perform all other directives deemed necessary by the laboratory manager.
- Must assume routine responsibilities of the laboratory manager as directed in their absence.
