Family Nurse Practitioner
Unique Opportunity to Practice Community Medicine
The Town of North Haven, Maine, seeks an experienced Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) with a high degree of professional independence for its town-owned Medical Clinic. The Clinic is staffed by two FNPs, who alternate schedules, one week on, one week off. The FNP will provide clinical coverage, serve as Local Public Health Officer, and work closely with the other FNP and clinic staff to ensure that the clinic operates effectively and complies with regulations regarding the storage of prescription medicines, vaccine distribution, and other regulated matters. The FNPs work collaboratively to assure continuity of care for patients and support the Town’s volunteer Emergency Medical Services (EMS) unit.
North Haven is an island located twelve miles from the Midcoast city of Rockland and is served by a Maine Department of Transportation ferry making three round trips a day. Its year-round population of 400 increases substantially during the summer months.
The North Haven Medical Clinic is a Family Practice Clinic that provides primary and urgent care, including but not limited to physical exams, diagnosis, and treatment of common ailments, prescribing medications, treatment and repair of lacerations, and biopsies. The care provided extends through the entire life span, from infancy through end-of-life. The Clinic is the Primary Care Provider for many island residents. Pediatric patients are encouraged to have a primary pediatrician on the mainland; however, the Clinic FNPs commonly see infants and children for acute health issues. Likewise, adults who have primary care and specialty providers elsewhere are commonly seen for some routine visits and acute health problems. The practice excludes obstetrical services, however, women’s health care, including GYN exams, are part of the practice. Emergency care is provided to the extent that our facilities allow. If a higher level of care is needed, transport to that higher level of care is provided in collaboration with the island’s EMS crew and ambulance. The FNPs also assist with community public health education.
FNPs provide home visits to house-bound patients and residents/patients in the island’s six-room assisted living facility. They also respond with the EMS crew to 911 calls to provide stabilizing emergency care for patients who may need to be transported to mainland hospitals. Most times, the FNP accompanies the patient and the EMTs, on the trip to higher-level care on the mainland. Practitioners are on call 24/7 during their weekly rotations. Clinic Hours are 8:00 am until 1:00 pm weekdays. Patients can also schedule appointments outside these hours if needed.
Applicants must possess current DEA, ACLS, and PALS certificates.
The Town provides a residence shared on alternate weeks by the two FNPs.
The Town offers a highly competitive package of compensation and benefits. Interested candidates should address a letter of interest and submit a resume to Rick Lattimer, Town Administrator, PO Box 400, ME 04853, or via email at administrator@northhavenmaine.org. Phone inquiries at 207-867-4433 are welcome.
